Becoming Cohoh

Who we are: Hostelling Enthusiasts

Cohoh encourages the use and support of all Hostelling International hostels, particularly Ohio's Malabar State Park's Hostel in Lucas,  while actively promoting the Peace, Beauty, History, Culture, and Shared Values of Ohioans.

What we do: Educate!

Travel Education
Cohoh offers travel education workshops to help both youth and adults understand how to travel smartly, safely, and responsibly. Participants learn to explore the world with an open mind, and with cultural and environmental sensitivity. Tips are given on travel research and planning, budgeting, packing light, and saving money.

Community Walls
This fun and educational program connects local youth to their community through art.  They start by asking the question "What is community to you?"  Youth work together to investigate their own community and culture, to express their unique perspectives and experiences, and to install their mural within their community. Visitors are pleased to have an insider's view of the area, and the student participants are proud to demonstrate the most note-worthy aspects of their home region.

Cultural Awareness
Cohoh informs the Central Ohio community about worldwide hostelling experiences, and local opportunities to connect with internationals visiting and living in the Central Ohio area. Through information booths at yearly community events such as Columbus' International Festival, Green Columbus' Earth Day Celebration, ComFest at Goodale Park, University club fairs on college campuses, etc., important referrals and information are shared with event goers.

Cultural Kitchen
Based on a curriculum of cultural competency and global awareness, students choose a country to study and create an interactive and informative presentation to demonstrate what they have learned about the country they have studied. Cultural Kitchen's explore a culture, planning a meal, cooking the food, a traditional meal is shared, all the while young people are offered a glimpse of the wide world beyond their homes. It's a time to meet new people, increasing appreciation, respect and tolerance of other cultures.
